Description: Процесс демократизации конца 1980-х годов в СССР не мог не затронуть межнациональные отношения. Как только повеяло воздухом свободы, дремавшие долгие годы конфликты тут же напомнили о себе. В руководстве национальных республик все глубже укоренялось мнение, что лучший способ избавиться от «эксплуатации» со стороны центра — отделиться от СССР. С этой целью представители местной партийной элиты стали поддерживать националистические выступления, что ожидаемо привело к серии затяжных межнациональных конфликтов. Одно из таких противостояний между азербайджанцами и армянами переросло в кровопролитную войну за Нагорный Карабах. С 1988-го по 1994 год эта война унесла более 17 тысяч жизней. И по сей день в Карабахе гибнут люди, а этот конфликт остается единственным на постсоветском пространстве, в который непосредственно вовлечены два независимых государства. О причинах многолетнего противостояния азербайджанцев и армян и о том, какую роль сыграли межнациональные конфликты в развале Советского Союза.
