Международная группа учёных при участии Елены Чуриловой из Международной лаборатории исследований населения и здоровья НИУ ВШЭ подтвердила, что культура предпочтения сыновей среди кавказских родителей существовала и в советское время. Однако её воплощение в реальность происходило не через селективные аборты, а через увеличение количества беременностей и родов в надежде на рождение мальчика, если первыми детьми оказывались девочки. Таким образом феномен предпочтения сыновей на Кавказе, ярко проявляющий себя в последние десятилетия, — не новая тенденция, а следствие глубоко укоренившейся культурной традиции.
