Более того, с 19 по 23 октября были поочередно введены запреты на поставки «чёрного золота» в США, Нидерланды, Португалию, Южную Родезию (современное Зимбабве) и ЮАР. Эти страны были обвинены арабскими правительствами в военной поддержке Израиля, с которым тогда Египет и Сирия вели так называемую войну «Судного дня», на первом этапе удачную для этих стран. Эмбарго было отменено в марте 1974 года. Но мировой нефтяной рынок изменился фактически навсегда. Цены в течение осени 1973 года увеличились в четыре раза. И не откатились затем назад. Нефть несмотря на последующие ценопады, превратилась в дорогостоящий ресурс. Страны ОПЕК удостоверились, что нефть может быть эффективным геополитическим оружием. Потребителям пришлось приступить к политике энергосбережения.
